New, New Years Resolutions

I really love the idea of setting goals & I love the feeling of accomplishment when I finally DO something other than school ;) Since I did my resolutions easy peasy last year I'm gonna try to step it up a bit and do more! So here it goes:

Sell something on etsy- I know it seem's small. But I have the store all set up and haven't taken the leap of actually adding items. I would love to make my first sale in 2012 and, who knows, it may turn into something great!

12 vintage dresses for 2012- This one follows in the footsteps of my last year's resolutions. I really enjoy making this a resolution because it pretty much forces myself to reward myself with one dress a month ;) (psh like I don't already)

Learn how to knit- Browsing etsy I am always shocked by how expensive knit scarves are! Also there is the added jealousy towards my co-workers as they do some crochet goodness during our staff meetings. So I found some yarn at my local goodwill and I'm willing to give it a whirl!

(p.s. I love the song in this video, does anyone know who it is?)

Food- I'm not quite sure what vibe I give off with this blog but if you didn't know I'm totally granola. My goal this year is to eat more real food & less food-like food. Drink a green smoothie once a week and eat more organic. Check out this cute poster that gives a step by step to making the perfect green drink.

Stress less- My last one is more personal than I usually do on this blog, but why not?
School is extremely stressful for me & I really want to try to do to just take a moment everyday and calm down. Whether it be a walk, writing a blog post, doing yoga or simply having a date night with one of my favorite ladies.

2011 New Years Resolutions

Here it is! I promised myself one year ago I would hold myself accountable to my new years resolutions on December 31st...

Get into the Nursing Program- I got in! I received my acceptance letter the day of my Birthday and I can't imagine a better gift!

(This was for a pregnancy project. It's just padding!!)

Purchase (and wear) 11 Vintage Dresses- I went crazy. Absolutely freaking nuts. I bought over 30 dresses this year & completely OBLITERATED the "box" I had been in for so many years. It's been so amazingly fun to be myself and to be known as the "stylish one." People have even been asking me to bring them shopping =) I'll have a post later with more details.

Post What I Wore Photos- I posted a couple! Although not as many as I had hoped. This one was harder for me. Because although it was easy to put myself "out there" in the real world some days I didn't have the confidence to open myself to the scrutiny of the "internet world"

Purge my Closet- Haha, well you win some, you lose some. And as you saw above I purchased a ton of dresses and completely failed on this one.

Instagram - Holiday's 2011

I've been behind on posts because, well to be honest, it's been fun to not do anything this break. Here's a look at my Holiday's.

I tried something new with my hair this last week or so. It's been fun, but I love my crazy curls so this phase may be over.

This year I became a master wrapper. It was fun ;) I also got my very own Charlie Brown Christmas tree!

My cousin got me a mug and Salt & Pepper shakers from my Etsy, and I'm thrilled ;) Also my uncle brought me some records from his collection for Christmas, so I set up in the living room on Christmas day & brought some nostalgia to the house. It was fun to sing 60's classics with my grandparents.

Jordan got an iPod for Christmas and it was so fun watching him open it <3

One of the most unique gifts I got this year was from Jordan. This stuffed uterus pillow is something every future midwife needs in their lives!!

And just to top off how amazing my Christmas was... This is a $1 scratch off Jordan's cousin stuck in my Christmas card. I won $500. When does that ever happen??

Inspiration from: Glorious 39

Sometimes when I'm watching a movie I come for the story and stay for the wardrobe. Glorious 39 is a movie based around a very influential family and the wardrobe portrayed that with glamorous dresses, perfect chiffon blouses and stylish high waisted trousers. It took place on the brink of world war II and although the movie is slow moving the imagery more than makes up (in my opinion).

Silk, velvet, lace and embellishment are the things I looked for when searching for clothes to go with this movie.

Instagram - Finals Week

My last week of class was a hard one and as you'll soon see I did a lot of stress shopping. I consider it time well spent ;)

There is seriously nothing better than a great floral couch. This bad boy was only $9 and I would have made him mine if I had a place to put him! And seriously, how sweet is this toy fridge? I just love it!

I spent some time going through my thing's and trying to decide what I should sell in the shop. Unfortunately, I seem to love everything I own! This dress was one of the contenders and I ended up wearing it all day and falling in love with the bubble skirt all over again.

How cute is this panda dress my friend found!? We seriously considered buying it to turn it into an apron but decided to let it go.

I finally got to go home this Friday after I closed down the dorm and I was so happy to see my family! I took this picture of my little sister as she was singing Christmas carols and every time I see it it warms my heart <3

I discovered sweet leaf tea on my way to a wedding one amazing weekend and saw my little sister discover the joy of towels fresh out of the dryer.

Me and Jordan celebrated our 4th year together on September 28th <3

This semester I stopped caring about how others thought of my clothing... & I had fun with getting dressed each day!

I spent Thanksgiving with the most amazing people in the most beautiful house.

And now that this semester is coming to a close I can't wait for winter break to come and for a new chapter to begin...

I plan on doing weekly Instagram posts so there won't be as many photos next time!

Inspiration from: I Capture the Castle

There's nothing better than watching a movie filled with endless amounts of sartorial inspiration. Lately the types of movies that have inspired me are films set in the 40s. I really recommend I Capture the Castle for the plot, beautiful wardrobe and breathtaking imagery.

One thing I loved about the wardrobe in I Capture the Castle was the marriage of extreme poverty to luxury. Every scene had a strange juxtaposition of silks and velvet next to crumbling walls and dirty floors. One character that really stood out to me was Rose. She has a bohemian & eclectic feel to her style that gave her a little more edge than the other characters, although all of them had equally stunning wardrobes. The clothing in the film were meant to be outdated and you could see an amazing mixture of 20s and 30s style along with modern (for that time) 40s styles.

Oh how I miss you. School is rough, but if it wasn't hard that would mean I wasn't getting anything from it. Next week I start my first shift at the hospital with clinical's and I am scared out of my mind. The insane amount of responsibility is starting to get to me and I hope I will get comfortable soon. Speaking of being comfortable, it's cold. Not New York cold at the moment, but enough for me to complain. I feel like the colder it gets the less I'm concerned with "fashion" and my hibernation/survival mode kicks in. If I happen to wear anything other than jeans + baggy sweater + scarf, I'll let you know with some pictures. ;)

An apartment for me and Jordan. Mostly it is a desire to live together because we just celebrated our 4 year anniversary.

I regret:
Not being more motivated in my efforts to open an etsy shop (I have the inventory now it's just time to take the pictures!). I also regret not feeding my artistic side more, whether it be self expression with the way I dress or with doing something more artistic daily.

I eat anything:
Salty, buttery or cheesy. Shame on me.

I've been a little bit behind with... well everything so this is actually an outfit I wore this time last week.

I love this little dress I picked up at goodwill for $3. Although you can't really see it in the photos it's sheer and has the cutest peter pan collar.

The day I wore this one of my residents told me I have a "vintage hippie" style. Some people just know the right things to say ;)

Thursday it was freezing... and then it wasn't. I personally hate it when the weather pulls a 180 and changes because here I am stuck in the middle of the day with a sweater & a scarf on when the weather shoots from 45 to 70 (with sun).

Yesterday me & Jordan went to lunch at our campus's dining hall & I spotted a wall I've walked by a million times before. Every time I would walk by it I would think "that is the perfect place to take outfit photo's" but I never would! Well today was that day =) I decided to ignore weird stares & had Jordan snap a couple of photos. My outfit wasn't anything special but it felt good to step out of my comfort zone & take pictures outdoors!

A lot of things are fun about growing up; independence, listening to loud music, not having to clean your room (if you're into that), staying out as late (or early) as you want. But do you know what isn't fun about growing up? You have to buy stuff.

September 11th, A day I will always remember

I just finished watching the memorial service & my heart is heavy. I cannot believe ten years have passed since that day.
I really thought this quote, spoken by Abraham Lincoln during the Gettysburg address, still rings true today,

"But, in a larger sense, we cannot dedicate, we cannot consecrate, we cannot hallow this ground. The brave men, living and dead who struggled here have consecrated it far above our poor power to add or detract."

I am sending all my love to the families & friends who must now continue to endure the loss of their loved ones. And may the souls of all those brave men & women lost on this day ten years ago rest in peace.

Each year adjusting to the new school routine is getting harder & harder. I just started my first semester in the Nursing program & it has been challenging trying to figure out a way to balance my time. Although I still have passion for vintage clothing & blogging its been harder and harder to find time to devote to it. I hope that soon I will be able to fall back into a posting schedule & won't neglect my little slice of the internet anymore =)

Favorite Shop - The Magic Carousel

It's very rare I happen across a store where I want everything in it. But the curator of the Etsy shop The Magic Carousel makes it hard not to want everything you lay your eyes on. There is a magical feel to every piece of clothing and each piece evokes a strong feeling of nostalgia. The owner of the store writes an equally lovely blog where she describes her fascination with "things that have been loved, been used and been saved in a time when everything is disposable. it is from this love the magic carousel was born, a project many years in the making."

Jordan had family staying over last week so we were very busy. After they left I realized I had forgotten to post my favorite posts of the week! So here are my favorite posts from the last two weeks.

I was loving EVERYTHING on A Beautiful Mess over the last couple weeks so this was really hard to narrow down. I absolutely LOVED her 10 Things I Love // Mad Men Edition post along with an awesome tutorial on how to style a beehive hairstyle and how to rag roll your hair. And as if all that wasn't sweet enough Elsie's sister posted a recipe for Lemonade Cupcakes. Nom.

I love going into the Vogue archives and reading the captions with the covers. Something really drew me to this issue. It's funny. In terms of our history 89 years really isn't that long but when you read some of the captions below you truly get a sense of how much things change over time.

When I saw the title to this Coveteur post I flipped! I am a HUGE Mad Men fan! But what really made me more excited is the fact she wears vintage in real life. Her clothing collection is enviable to me and trust me that is the first time I've ever said that about a 11 year old.

Sometimes the simple things in life just give you a heartwarming feeling, like fresh flowers <3

I've always wanted a pair of Ferragamo flats but unfortunately they cost a pretty penny. Enter ebay to save the day! Nine dollars later and I am the proud owner of a pair of hunter green Ferragamo flats. Pretty bow and all. I'm not going to lie. I look like a dork, because all day I've been staring at my feet and smiling ;)

Lydia from Chic on the Cheap sent me this bag and it's so darling I cant even stand it! When I received her email asking if I would like her to send it to me I was so touched. Its funny how close I feel to some blogger's I've never even met. But that's really what I love about this community. We have a chance to connect with people that love the same things we do!

Me and Jordan are treasure hunters. There is nothing better for us to do as a couple than go thrifting. We can spend hours of sifting through bins, racks, and shelves for treasures that will one day fill our home. Yesterday we went on our favorite kind of date. To our favorite local thrift store! I found this gorgeous dress and like a crazy person I bought these little red baby moccasins simply because I couldn't resist. Its so hard to find vintage baby clothes I figure I may as well start early ;)

Badger Sunscreen Review

Sorry for the unintentionally long hiatus. I went on a week long trip to Florida and couldn't bear to leave the beach for long enough to write a post (sorry loves!).

Florida was hot and wonderful but let me tell you, it is not exactly the best place to test out a new sunscreen. While most people would think it best to air on the side of caution and over apply rather than under apply their new sunscreen, I unfortunately, (probably due to my brains being addled by the sun) did the former and got a wicked burn my first day of vacation. Which is the worst. But after applying it for the rest of the week (properly) I did not burn any more than I had initially (and actually have a pretty sweet tan ;)

So one thing I must stress about this review is this product works, but NOT like conventional sunscreens. It is a physical barrier apposed to a chemical barrier and you must apply it thickly enough to actually work.

The color is white and it is extremely thick. I bought a 2.9 oz bottle and still had some left over after a week of multiple applications over my entire body. When I initially rubbed it onto my skin it left a white sheen but after a couple minutes it soaked in and you couldn't see it at all. The best way to apply is too rub it between your hands to thin out the cream before applying. Some reviewers have complained of a scent but it was more natural smelling to me than anything.

Because their are so many nourishing oils in this I have actually been using this as a moisturizer/base for my mineral makeup and loving it!

I would highly recommend this product for everyday use on the face and for the occasional full body use with the warning that you must be diligent with re-application and also you should use enough to see it on your skin before it soaks in. But because of the thick consistency if you are looking for an all over sunblock for every day use this may be more work than you are looking for.

Annual Sunscreen Report

Summers here which means its time to break out those short dresses, floppy hats (super cute) and sunscreen! But do you know what ingredients are in your sunscreen? Recently I've had a epiphany of sorts about skin care products. Whether it is moisturizer, concealer or sunscreen, many things we put on our skin contain chemicals that may be causing us more harm than good. Luckily the EWG has taken all of the guess work out of picking out a sunscreen. They have compiled their annual sunscreen report so you don't need to guess what you're putting on your skin.

I used the sunscreen report to pick out one of the many nontoxic options they had. I opted for Badger Unscented Sunscreen (1 - hazard score) for my trip to Florida next week. I should be getting it soon and I'll let you know how it works!

Also the EWG has a FAQ page about sunscreens. I really recommend you read it if you're interested in knowing more. So what do you think? Will you be switching to a nontoxic sunscreen this year?

School is over! Summer's here =) I'm just about to leave my last shift as a desk worker in my dorm and go home for the summer and I feel as if I am posed on the edge of the unknown. With the small hometown pharmacy I worked at for the last three years being bought out by a mega corp. (guess who?) I am jobless and will probably remain so until school starts up and I begin my semester of nursing classes in a new dorm with new people. Although usually I would view this as a time to mourn it appears mentally I've taken a different approach and have coping well and thinking of it more as a time for new beginnings.

One thing I decided I wanted to try this summer is to open an Etsy shop. It's a work in progress idea and will most likely take a couple weeks to figure out but I hope to have some things posted soon.

Another thing I am excited about is HUGE amount of time I will have to work on my very neglected blog. I am really excited to see what this summer holds and I am so glad I have you to share it with.

A couple weeks ago while reading a Top Shelf editorial at Into The Gloss I clicked a link that lead me to the makeup line RMS Beauty and right to the website Beauty Truth.

Beauty Truth is a website that strongly advocates organic skincare and condemns the beauty industry for its use of toxic products in their skincare. After reading through the site I was horrified by some of the things I learned...

I really recommend the site if you are interested in learning about the truth of what we put into our bodies, but don't read it if you aren't willing to reevaluate your skincare routine. I swear I was sitting on my roommates futon surrounded by every beauty product I own, panicking, because on the list of top 10 ingredients to avoid, each product I own contained at least one.

This information opened my eyes to the world of organic skincare. I recommend the blog Fig & Sage for their organic makeup reviews if your interested in learning about beauty alternatives.

The week I turned 20.

I had such a whirlwind week. Monday was me and Jordan's three and a half year anniversary (yes we celebrate half years, double the fun ;). We went to see The King's Speech which was amazing and snuck chinese food into the theater, which, in retrospect wasn't too sneaky because my bag was bulging and it smelled up the entire theater... anyways... it was delicious =)

Tuesday appeared to be ordinary until I got an email saying that I was accepted into my schools Nursing Program. I am completely overwhelmed that I got in and am so happy that I am one step closer to getting my dream job.

Wednesday was my 20th birthday and I got dressed up in my favorite 60s dress (its loud, and gets looks)

We went out and got Chinese food (again) with my girlfriends.. and Jordan. Jordan's present to me was this AWESOME bag!

I love flipping through the vogue cover archives and I always seem seem especially drawn to the 1960's. I copied some of the info vogue supplied about the issue and put it below. Its really interesting to read how much things have changed and yet how much they have stayed the same. Although it seems spring has once again evaded us (yes its snowing, again) it's still nice to look at this photo and pretend summers here =)

One thing me and Jordan really love to do is go thrifting. A little while back I found this 60s flower print dress and just "rediscovered" it in my closet last week.

I am completely aware of the fact it is tacky and way too bright but in this gloomy weather it really cheers me up. My mom also payed me the biggest compliment by saying it looked like something her mother wore in the 60s. Mission accomplished.

Goodwill's record selection really depends on who has been donating recently. Luckily for me someone had just donated their entire Claudine Longet collection and I got them all! If you like the 60s sound you'll love Claudine. I also picked up another Melanie album to add to my collection.

One of the best thing's about thrifting to me is the interesting things I come across, like these 60s micro mini's. (I didnt buy either of them.)

You cant see it in this picture (sorry about the crappy lighting) but these mini's end right where the picture ends. Making them the funniest things to try on. They might have been little girl's dresses, or a very rebellious teenagers =)

To me this was the seasons most anticipated show. The rumour of a royal commission and the still fresh death of a former designer and artist came together and made the fashion world wonder, "would there be an allusion to a royal wedding dress?" "Will Sarah Burton once again carry on dramatic and eclectic style that McQueen once brought to the runway?"... And like always. We were not disappointed.
The dramatics were also carried out with the venue. The show took place in the La Conciergerie, Marie Antoinette's prison before her death and also the site of a previous McQueen show. The models accented the clothing with their armor like hairstyles and nearly nude faces while wearing dresses that are truly fit for a Queen.

When I was a little girl I received a rock star Barbie for Christmas one year and with her was a pink tape that had a couple Barbie tracks on it.
